I’m the editor-in-chief of the Nixa High School news magazine: Wingspan. As a journalist, I communicate and discover.

Communication is powerful. For almost two decades I’ve been working hard to build my communication skills because I know what it feels like to not be understood. When I was very young I had severe apraxia of speech and spent seven years in speech therapy. Nowadays I apply the lessons learned from not being understood to my work in journalism. On our team communication is vital. I encourage people to share their ideas, even when they disagree with me, because what I see and experience is different from others.

 

Discovery is more than interesting story topics. To discover something one must observe and experiment. I am constantly trying new ideas with our team. For example, during the Winter issue of 2024, we created a photo team. Their job was to take photos for reporters. It worked well. Now we're trying to up our activity on our website. We created a team of reporters, a website timeline and possibly create new positions in the future. It's important to try to improve even if the first attempt isn't up to expectations.
